Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Rings in Melbourne

Every lab grown diamond engagement ring we sell is made on Level 7 of a building on Dorcas Street in Southbank. Not ordered in finished from a supplier and laid out in a tray. Cast, set and polished here, after you have approved the design.

That is the difference worth knowing about, because most Melbourne retailers selling lab grown diamonds are buying finished rings or forwarding your design to a third party workshop. It is not dishonest, it is just how the trade works. It does mean that when something needs changing, the person you spoke to has to ask someone else. Here, the person who shows you the stone is the person who sets it.

Where we are and how to get here

The studio is at Level 7, 80 Dorcas Street, Southbank VIC 3006. Southbank sits on the south bank of the Yarra, so the CBD is a short walk across the river. The Arts Centre and the Crown precinct are both close by, which makes it an easy place to fold into an afternoon you were half planning anyway.

We are by appointment only, Monday to Saturday. Most weekday appointments run from midday, and Friday and Saturday start late morning. There is no walk in counter, and that is deliberate. When you arrive, the stones and settings we talked about are already out on the bench.

Call +61 435 232 015 if you need to talk to someone before you commit to a time, or book an appointment and pick a slot that suits you.

What a Melbourne appointment actually involves

Thirty minutes, one on one. Not a sales floor, not a queue.

We start with what she wears now, because that tells us more than any inspiration board. Yellow gold or white. Thin band or substantial. Whether she takes rings off to work. Then we put stones in front of you. A 1.5 carat oval next to a 2 carat oval, on a hand, under normal light. Photographs flatten that difference to nothing. In person it takes about four seconds to decide.

Bring four things and the appointment does more work:

  • A ring she already wears, so we can size it accurately
  • Inspiration images, even contradictory ones
  • A rough budget, said out loud, so we stop showing you things that are wrong
  • Your questions, including the awkward ones about resale and certification

If you cannot get in before you need a size, we will post you a free ring sizer.

The five steps from appointment to finished ring

  1. Consultation. Thirty minutes in Southbank, or by video call if that is easier. Shape, carat, setting, metal, budget.
  2. Design and render. We draw the ring and send you a 3D render before any metal is cut. You approve it or you send it back. Nothing gets cast on an assumption.
  3. Stone selection. We source IGI certified lab grown diamonds against your brief and show you the reports. Cut grade first, then colour, then clarity, in that order, because cut is the one that decides how the stone actually behaves in light.
  4. Making. Casting, setting, finishing. Ready in four weeks from approval.
  5. Collection or delivery. Pick it up in Southbank, or we send it carbon offset and insured, signature required, anywhere in Australia.

What it costs

Lab grown diamond designs start at AU$1,350. Moissanite starts at AU$800.

Three things move the number: carat weight, the metal, and how much diamond is set into the band as well as the centre. A solitaire in 14k gold is the most efficient way to buy a large centre stone, because you are not paying for forty small stones down the shoulders. A pave band with a halo will roughly double the stone cost for the same centre size.

Lab grown diamond prices have fallen substantially since 2020 as growing capacity scaled up. That is good news if you are buying now and worth understanding if you are thinking about resale. A lab grown diamond does not hold its value the way people hope. We would rather say that here than have you find out in ten years. If that matters to you, read the honest answer on lab grown diamond value before you buy anything from anyone.

Certification, and why we bother

Every lab grown diamond we set is IGI certified and laser inscribed on the girdle with the report number. Under a loupe you can read the inscription and match it to the certificate. That is the only way to know the stone in your ring is the stone on the paperwork.

If you want to know what the numbers on a report mean before you sit down with us, our guide to reading an IGI certificate covers it.

Warranty and resizing, stated accurately

The lifetime warranty covers craftsmanship, meaning manufacturing faults such as an unstable setting or a flawed metal finish, and it covers the optical properties of the stone: clarity, colour, fire, lustre and brilliance. It excludes normal wear such as scratches, damage from misuse or improper care, chipped or cracked stones, lost stones, theft and third party repairs. It is non transferable to a later owner.

Resizing is one free resize within three months of purchase, up to four sizes up or down, or two sizes on a pave ring. Additional resizes start at $80 and vary with the metal. You pay postage to us, we pay return postage.

We are spelling this out because plenty of jewellers advertise resizing that is free for life, and the fine print never matches the headline. Ours is written down.

Browse the lab grown diamond engagement rings to see what we make, or the moissanite engagement rings if you want the same look for less. Neither collection is the limit of what we can build. Most of what leaves the studio started as a conversation about something in one of them.

Melbourne FAQ

Where is your Melbourne studio?

Level 7, 80 Dorcas Street, Southbank VIC 3006. It is on the south side of the Yarra, walking distance from the CBD across the river, and close to the Arts Centre and Crown precinct. The studio runs by appointment only, Monday to Saturday, so there is always someone there to meet you and your stones and settings are laid out before you arrive.

Do I have to visit the studio to buy a lab grown diamond ring?

No. Plenty of Melbourne clients do the whole thing by video call and courier. The appointment exists because handling a 1.5 carat oval next to a 2 carat oval settles a decision that photographs never will. If you can get to Southbank, it is worth the thirty minutes.

How long does a lab grown diamond engagement ring take to make?

Ready in four weeks. That covers design, your approval of the render, stone selection, casting, setting and final polish. Tell us your proposal date at the first appointment so we can work backwards from it.

What does a lab grown diamond engagement ring cost in Melbourne?

Lab grown diamond designs start at AU$1,350. The three things that move the price are carat weight, the metal, and how much diamond sits in the band. A solitaire in 14k gold is the cheapest way to buy a large centre stone. Moissanite designs start at AU$800 if the budget is tighter.

Are your lab grown diamonds certified?

Yes. Every lab grown diamond we set is IGI certified and laser inscribed on the girdle with its report number. You can read the inscription under magnification and match it to the paperwork. Moissanite is GRC certified.

Can I get my ring resized later?

One free resize within three months of purchase, up to four sizes up or down, or two sizes on a pave ring. Additional resizes start at $80 and vary with the metal. You pay postage to us, we pay return postage.
