Trilogy Engagement Rings

Trilogy moissanite engagement rings, sent from Melbourne

A trilogy ring sets three stones side by side: one centre stone with a companion on each shoulder. It is one of the oldest engagement ring traditions still in regular use, and one of the few designs that carries a meaning most people already recognise.

Every trilogy is designed with you and made to order, then checked, finished and sent from our Southbank studio in Melbourne. You can see the full range in our trilogy engagement ring collection, or read on if you are still deciding whether a trilogy is right for you.

What the three stones mean

Past, present and future. The centre stone represents where you are now, and the two side stones the history you share and the life ahead of you. Some couples read them as friendship, love and fidelity instead. There is no official version, which is part of the appeal: the meaning is yours to assign.

Why couples choose a trilogy over a solitaire

The practical answer is presence. Because two extra stones sit either side of the centre, a trilogy reads wider and brighter on the finger than a solitaire with the same centre carat. If you want a ring that looks substantial without paying for a much larger centre stone, a trilogy is usually the more efficient way to get there.

The other reason is that a trilogy is quietly distinctive. A solitaire is timeless but common. Three stones still reads as classic, while looking like a decision rather than a default.

Choosing your three stones

The centre and the sides do not have to match. Some of our most-loved designs pair shapes deliberately:

  • Iris sets an oval centre against round sides, softening the whole ring.
  • Vega uses marquise stones to draw the eye along the finger.
  • Margot keeps all three step-cut for an art deco, architectural look.
  • Harper adds a full pavé band beneath an elongated cushion trilogy.

Scale matters more than shape. Side stones that are too large compete with the centre and the ring reads busy. Too small and you lose the point of a trilogy. We size the sides in proportion to the centre on every design, and you will see it in your CAD renders before anything is made.

Metals

Every trilogy can be made in 9k, 14k or 18k solid gold in white, yellow or rose, or in platinum 950. All are nickel-free and hypoallergenic.

We do not make engagement rings in sterling silver. It is too soft to hold three stones securely in a ring worn every day, and it tarnishes. For a ring meant to last a lifetime, gold or platinum is the honest recommendation, even though silver would be cheaper to sell you.

Moissanite or lab-grown diamond

Both, and the choice is genuinely yours. Our moissanite is graded D–E colour and VVS clarity with a GRC certificate. Our lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified for cut, colour and clarity, and are chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds. A trilogy amplifies the difference slightly, because you are seeing three stones rather than one, so it is worth comparing them side by side. Read our comparison guide or see both in person.

Sizing, resizing and care

One free resize within three months of purchase, handled in Melbourne. A plain trilogy band can be resized up to four sizes. If you choose a design with stones set into the band, such as a pavé trilogy, the range narrows to about two sizes, because the metal has to hold the stones.

If this is a surprise, do not guess quietly. Order our free ring sizer or check the size guide, and we will confirm sizing with you after you order.

Every ring carries a lifetime warranty on the stones, free polishing, and free return shipping both ways.

See them properly before you decide

Three stones are hard to judge from a photo. The proportions are the whole design, and they read differently in person.

Book a free consultation, in our Southbank studio or by video, and we will show you trilogy designs alongside solitaires so you can see the difference on an actual hand. There is no obligation. If nothing in the range is quite right, we can design a trilogy from scratch.
