Buying a ring from three and a half thousand kilometres away is a reasonable thing to do, provided you handle five specific risks. What follows is how to handle them. The time difference, and how we work around it

Perth is two hours behind Melbourne through winter, and three hours behind once daylight saving starts in the eastern states. That sounds trivial until you try to book a consultation and discover the only slots left are 8am your time.

We book around it. A late afternoon appointment in Melbourne lands in your early to mid afternoon, which is usually the easiest slot to take without leaving work. Equally, a mid morning slot your side is still within our day. Tell us the window that works and we will fit it rather than handing you a calendar and wishing you luck.

The other thing the time difference affects is response speed. If you email at 4pm on a Friday in Perth, that is 7pm in Melbourne. Build that into your planning, particularly in the last fortnight before a proposal.

Shipping to Western Australia takes longer, so plan for it

The ring is ready in four weeks from the day you approve the render. Then it has to cross the country.

Delivery to WA takes longer than delivery to Sydney or Brisbane, and it is more exposed to weather and freight disruption. We are not going to invent a number of days here, because the honest answer is that it varies. What we will do is tell you the realistic window when you book, and build a buffer into the schedule rather than cutting it fine.

The practical instruction: give us your proposal date at the first consultation, not two weeks out. If you have a date locked in, we work backwards from it. If you tell us afterwards, we are working with whatever is left.

Delivery is carbon offset, insured, and signature required. Have it sent to an address where someone will actually be present. Not a building lobby, not a parcel locker, and preferably not the address where the person being proposed to collects the post.

Five things to get right when the jeweller is interstate

1. Size it with a physical sizer, in the evening

Sizing is the most common failure in any remote purchase. Printed paper sizers stretch and string is worse. We post you a free ring sizer before anything is cast. Use it in the evening, because fingers are smaller in the morning and after air conditioning, and Perth summers make that swing wider than you would expect.

If it is a surprise, take a ring she already wears on the correct hand and measure the internal diameter properly.

2. Approve a render before casting

You should see a 3D render of the actual ring before metal is cut. That is where you catch a band thicker than you pictured or a stone sitting higher than you wanted. Changes at that stage are free. Changes after casting are not.

3. Get the certification in writing, with the report number

Every lab grown diamond we set is IGI certified and laser inscribed on the girdle with its report number, so the stone can be matched to the document. Moissanite is GRC certified. Ask for the report number in advance from anyone you buy from. A photograph of a certificate is not certification.

4. Read the warranty exclusions, not the headline

Our lifetime warranty covers craftsmanship, meaning manufacturing faults such as an unstable setting or a flawed metal finish, and the optical properties of the stone: clarity, colour, fire, lustre and brilliance. It excludes normal wear such as scratches, damage from misuse or improper care, chipped or cracked stones, lost stones, theft and third party repairs. It is non transferable.

That is a normal warranty honestly described. A warranty is not insurance, and a lost stone needs a separate policy.

5. Know the resizing terms before you pay, not after

One free resize within three months of purchase, up to four sizes up or down, or two sizes on a pave ring. Additional resizes start at $80 and vary with the metal. You pay postage to us, we pay return postage.

From Perth, a resize means the ring crosses the country twice. That is the strongest argument for getting the sizer step right the first time, and it is why we send one before casting rather than after an order goes wrong.

Lab grown diamond or moissanite
