Saying that first is the point. Plenty of sites will sell you a lab grown diamond ring under a Brisbane heading and let you assume there is a Queen Street counter behind it. There is not, not for us, and you would find out at the worst possible moment. What we do instead is run the whole process remotely, properly, and there are four parts of it that make that work.

How a Brisbane ring gets made without you flying south

Video consultation. Thirty minutes, one on one, same as an appointment in the studio. We talk through shape, carat, setting, metal and budget, and we can hold stones up to the camera. It is not the same as handling them, and we will say so when it matters.

A free ring sizer, posted out. Before anything is cast, we send you a free ring sizer. Sizing is the single most common thing that goes wrong when a ring is bought at distance, and it is entirely avoidable. Check the size in the evening, not first thing, because fingers swell. In Brisbane in February they swell more.

Renders before casting. You approve a 3D render of the actual ring before metal is cut. Changes at that stage are free. Changes after casting are not, which is why we do not let anything through without a yes.

Insured delivery. Carbon offset, insured, signature required. The ring is ready in four weeks, then it ships.

None of that is unusual. What matters is that it is written down before you order, rather than discovered afterwards.

Settings for a humid, coastal, outdoor life

This is the part Brisbane buyers get wrong most often, and it has nothing to do with which stone you choose.

Humidity and salt do not attack gold, and they certainly do not attack a diamond. A lab grown diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale and moissanite is 9.25. Neither is going to be damaged by a summer in Queensland. So the stone question, the one everyone spends weeks on, is not the question that decides whether the ring survives.

Setting height is. Here is why.

A high set solitaire lifts the stone three or four millimetres above the finger. That looks beautiful in a photograph and it catches on everything: swimmers, towels, car doors, the strap of a bag, a child's hair. Every catch puts lateral force on the claws. Do that a few hundred times and a claw lifts. Then sand or grit gets underneath the stone, and grit is abrasive enough to wear gold even though it will never touch the diamond.

A bezel setting wraps the girdle of the stone in a continuous rim of metal. Nothing to catch, nothing to lift, and the stone sits low. A half bezel gives you some of the same protection with more light coming in from the sides. A low profile four claw with heavy, well finished claws is the middle ground if a full bezel reads as too modern.

The second thing that matters in a humid climate is access for cleaning. Sunscreen, salt water and sweat leave a film under the stone that dulls it faster than anything else. A setting with an open gallery underneath can be cleaned with warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush in about a minute. A closed back setting cannot, and it goes cloudy.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners at home. They will dislodge a stone that has already worked slightly loose, and the first you will know about it is an empty setting.

If she swims often, works with her hands, or spends real time outdoors, we would put a bezel or low profile setting ahead of an extra half carat every time. The half carat is the thing you notice for a month. The setting is the thing you live with for thirty years.

What lab grown diamond actually gets you

A lab grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon structure, same hardness, same optical properties, grown in a reactor over roughly two to twelve weeks instead of being mined. It is not a simulant and it is not a substitute.

Every one we set is IGI certified and laser inscribed on the girdle with its report number, so you can match the stone in the ring to the document. Designs start at AU$1,350.

The unflattering part: lab grown diamond prices have fallen substantially since 2020 as growing capacity scaled up, and they are not an investment. If you are buying with resale in the back of your mind, do not. Buy the ring you want to look at.
