Will Moissanite Last Forever?

Yes, with normal wear and a clean every now and then, a moissanite lasts a lifetime. It sits at 9.25 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond at 10. It will not cloud, fade, or lose its sparkle.

That said, it is not indestructible. Same as a diamond. A hard knock on the right angle can chip any stone. Below is what actually matters when you wear one daily.

How hard is moissanite, really?

Mohs scale runs 1 to 10. Diamond is 10. Moissanite is 9.25. Sapphire is 9. Ruby and emerald sit at 8.

The difference between 9.25 and 10 sounds small on paper, but the Mohs scale is non-linear. Diamond is genuinely harder. In day-to-day wear though, you will not notice. Both shrug off the everyday scrapes that scratch softer stones.

Moissanite does not cloud

This one comes up a lot. The answer is no, moissanite does not cloud, yellow, or grow dull over time. The stone itself does not change.

What does change is what builds up on it. Hand cream, sunscreen, soap scum, dust from a sandy weekend at the beach. Any of that coats the pavilion and kills the sparkle. A two-minute wash in warm water with a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush brings it back.

If you wear it in the kitchen and the shower every day, plan on a proper clean every couple of weeks.

Chips and impact: the real risk

Harder stones are scratch-resistant but they can be brittle. Diamonds have cleavage planes, which means a sharp impact at the wrong angle can split one.

Moissanite has no cleavage plane. The structure is uniform. In our experience repairing both, moissanite is more forgiving with knocks than a diamond of the same size.

Two things still matter:

• Cuts with sharp corners (princess, marquise, pear) can chip at the tips. The setting protects them, but a direct hit on the tip is still a direct hit.
• Take the ring off for the gym, climbing, gardening, or anything where you'd hit metal against stone or concrete.

The setting and the gold are separate. Prongs wear down over years of daily wear and need re-tipping eventually, same as any ring. We handle that in our Southbank studio.
