Which Moissanite Is Closest To A Diamond? - Moissanite Engagement Rings

Which Moissanite Cut Looks Most Like a Diamond?

One of the most common questions we hear: which moissanite cut looks closest to a diamond? Worth answering properly because if you want a diamond look, the cut you pick matters more than the carat.

The answer comes down to facet patterns and how light moves through the stone. For a deeper look at the differences between the two stones, read our moissanite vs diamond comparison guide.

Round brilliant: the diamond classic

Round moissanite in a brilliant cut is the closest visual match to a traditional diamond. The 58-facet pattern is mathematically proportioned to manage light evenly. That distributes the stone's optics in a way that hides moissanite's signature double refraction.

In the studio, we put round moissanite engagement rings next to a diamond regularly. The visual similarity is striking. For most people, including some jewellers, it takes an actual tester to tell them apart.

Princess cut: angular and clean

If you prefer a modern angular look, princess is the second closest to a diamond appearance. The square facet pattern creates a structured light pattern that, while still showing moissanite's sparkle, reads as sophisticated rather than flashy.

Princess cuts have enough facet variety to avoid amplifying double refraction the way elongated shapes do.

Oval and elongated cuts: a different choice

Oval, cushion, and emerald cuts behave differently. The elongated shape concentrates light into smaller areas, which can create the crushed ice effect, a scattered shimmer across the stone instead of unified sparkle.

Honest take: if you choose an elongated cut, you're leaning into what makes moissanite different, not trying to match a diamond. That's not a bad thing. Many customers prefer oval moissanite or pear specifically because the extra sparkle is more eye-catching than a diamond would be.

Size matters

Larger moissanite stones, 2 carats and up, show more sparkle than smaller ones because there's more surface for light to travel through. That makes them read more obviously as moissanite, not less.

For the diamond-like look, stay between 0.8 and 1.5 carats. Plenty of presence, less of a light show. As it happens, this is also the sweet spot for engagement-ring impact on the hand.

Colour grade

Modern DEF moissanite is colourless. Older moissanite had a slight yellow tint, which was the giveaway for trained eyes. The DEF stones we stock take that issue off the table.

Our recommendation

If you specifically want moissanite that looks like a diamond: round brilliant, DEF colour, 0.8 to 1.5 carats. If you prefer something more modern, princess delivers a similar result. You can also pair either with a hidden halo setting to boost the diamond-like appearance.

What we usually tell customers in the studio: don't choose moissanite to pretend it's a diamond. Choose it because you want a stone that's harder, more affordable, and backed by a lifetime warranty. Moissanite is beautiful on its own terms.
