How to Clean and Care for Your Moissanite Engagement Ring
Share
The short version: warm water, a drop of dish soap, a soft toothbrush, two minutes. Once a fortnight if you wear it daily, more often if you cook or apply hand cream a lot.
That's all most rings ever need. Below is the longer version, plus what to actually avoid.
The home clean (2 minutes)
- Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and one drop of plain dish soap.
- Drop the ring in. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes so the build-up loosens.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Focus on the back of the stone (the pavilion), which is where hand cream and soap film build up. Get under the prongs and behind the gallery.
- Rinse under cold water. Plug the sink first.
- Dry with a lint-free cloth.
That's the whole routine. No ultrasonic, no steam, no chemicals. You don't need any of that for a clean stone in good prongs.
What to avoid
- Chlorine. Pool, spa, hot tub. Chlorine attacks the alloys in 18K gold (especially anything with copper) over time. It's not instant, but repeated exposure dulls the metal and weakens claws. Take the ring off.
- Bleach and household cleaners. Same issue. Rubber gloves don't fully protect; just take it off.
- Gym, gardening, beach, climbing. Sand and grit are abrasive. Weights and bars chip stones. Take it off.
- Sleeping in it long-term. Optional. Most clients do. It does mean more frequent prong-checks.
- Ultrasonic cleaners at home. Fine for the stone, can loosen prongs over time on older settings. Get it done at a jeweller who'll re-check the setting after.
Does moissanite cloud?
No. The stone itself is stable and won't yellow, fog, or lose sparkle. If your ring looks dull, it's almost always build-up on the pavilion. Two minutes in soapy water fixes it.
When to bring it in
Once a year for a proper check. We look at the prongs, the shank, and clean it in our ultrasonic with a fresh inspection. It's free for any ring we made. Takes 20 minutes if you wait.
Also bring it in straight away if:
- A prong feels rough or sharp against your other fingers
- The stone clicks or moves when you tap it gently
- You've taken a hard knock against something solid
Lifetime stone warranty
Every moissanite we set is covered for life. Chip, crack, anything, we replace the stone. Prongs and re-plating are separate but we handle those too.
